In 1779 A Series Of Canals And Locks Were Constructed Around The Coteau Du Lac Rapids To Help Conquer The St. Lawrence River. The Walls Were Native Rock Quarried By Cornish Miners. The Three Locks Were 40 Feet By 21/2 Feet Deep And Would Pass Canoes Or Batteaux. From A Painting, Captain William Twiss Is Shown On An Inspection Trip Of The Locks As A Batteau (Boat) Is Being Pulled Through. Many Who Sought To Live In Quebec And Ontario Soon Travelled This Route |
